Information about Sessions

During the first session we will talk over what's bringing you to counselling/therapy and how best to proceed. This initial assessment will:

  1. Give us the opportunity to meet and decide if we want to work together
  2. Enable us to determine whether we believe I can help you achieve your aims and objectives
  3. Provide you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have before we commit to working together
  4. Provide me with the opportunity to collect the necessary basic information from you(i.e. your address, telephone number, doctor's name and address etc.)
  5. Give us time needed to go through the business contract that I use and confirm that you are happy agreeing to it

If we decide to commit to working together, we will then arrange the next session. If we are not able to work together I attempt to assist by providing, wherever possible, alternative therapists and agencies to contact.

Please note that talking therapies are more likely to work if you feel comfortable and at ease with your counsellor/therapist, so I will not be offended if you feel unable to work with me.

Subsequent Sessions

Frequency:depending on the needs of the individual client/couple, I usually suggest meeting once each week.

  1. Time of sessions: I usually recommend to clients that we commit to meeting on the same day and at the same time each week. I do this for a number of reasons:
  2. It provides clients with security, knowing that there is time kept available specifically for them each week
  3. It provides consistency and structure to the work
  4. It helps me structure my working week
  5. Psychologically it is often helpful to clients to have the same period of time between sessions to process the work we do together.

Number of Sessions:
If we decide to work together, the number of sessions will depend on the nature of the problem, the type of change you are looking to achieve, and your own readiness to take the necessary steps.

Short-Term Therapy:
As I work from a brief therapy framework this could typically be between six and eighteen sesisons, seldom going beyond this. We will review or work together regularly, usually every three sessions, in order to assess progress and see if further sessions are required or not.

Cancelling sessions and changing time and/or day of session:
I request as much notice as possible to change the time or day of a session.
Please Note:
I require at least 24 hours notice to cancel a session or the full fee will be payable.

Length of sessions:
Each session lasts fifty (50) minutes.
